‘MOTTAINAI’ is a word that conveys an ancient Japanese philosophy portraying an inherent respect for nature. The global use of this beautiful Japanese spiritual culture was popularized by Kenyan environmentalist Wangari Maathai. In honor of her spirit, IKEUCHI ORGANIC joined the MOTTAINAI campaign making towels that aim for a sustainable society. A part of the sales go to support the Green Belt Movement, an organization founded on Maathai’s indomitable spirit.
Wangari Maathai, the green warrior. Maathai founded the Green Belt Movement along with women in rural Kenya to plant trees and combat the power structure that creates poverty due to deforestation and environmental destruction. Despite government suppression, 100,000 people have participated in the movement to date and planted over 50 million seedlings. The MOTTAINAI TREE towel was created with the wish of spreading more beautiful forest on Maathai’s home land, Kenya.View Details
The Green Belt Movement began with planting just seven trees. We learnt that while the power of the individual may be small, when numbers increase the impact can be huge. We believe that the 3Rs represented by MOTTAINAI BAMBOO (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) will one day grow to a large circle. MOTTAINAI BAMBOO towels are made with a sense of respect.View Details
